In an ideal world, organizations never experience data loss, because they have the systems in place to prevent problems as well as backup programs to restore data when something does go wrong. However, this is not an ideal world, and that’s why there is a data recovery industry.

Whether it is a sudden, catastrophic event or a slow deterioration of performance, data loss means essential information cannot be accessed. Managers often do not realize how complex and fragile their data is until it is too late. The electrons stored on magnetic tape or a hard drive can be scrambled by viruses, erased by power surges, obscured by smoke or, possibly worst of all, never properly backed up.

When data is lost, nothing a business can do on its own will bring it back. Sometimes frantic efforts can even make the situation worse. There have been some unfortunate cases where misguided recovery efforts have turned a company’s missing data into lost data, There are very few situations where no data at all can be recovered. In many of those cases, the damage is so extensive that clients make that judgment on their own.

The loss of critical data can literally reduce a business to bankruptcy, so a good recovery company looks beyond the computing aspects of data loss to help manage the organizational and personal situations that arise during a crisis. Without honest and open communication, the job of data recovery can be stalled. And delay can be fatal.
