In a press release issued in February 2007, the British Insurance Brokers’ Association reported that “Government figures suggest nearly one in five businesses suffers a major disruption every year. Further research suggests 80% of businesses affected by a major incident close down within 18 months, and 90% of those who lose their data are forced to close down within two years.”

Patrick Mercer, Shadow Security Minister in the UK Parliament stated in the release.

“Events in recent years including the Carlisle floods, the Buncefield explosion and even the recent tornadoes in London have shown just how suddenly businesses can be hit.”

CBL has received projects from Western Canada, where more than 1,000 homes across the province of British Columbia were on evacuation alert due to threat of flooding in June. In May, Saskatchewan drivers were put on alert to watch for potential highway flooding and bridge washouts. And just this past weekend, tornadoes touched down in Manitoba.

Residential computer users and businesses, big or small, enterprise or SOHO, need to be prepared.

Don’t throw in the towel when man-made or natural disasters hit. When taking assessment of losses, computer users should know data is very resilient and is recoverable. Include data recovery in disaster recovery or business continuity plans.

Businesses should also explore with their insurance companies what exposure they may have or what coverage exists for business losses or intellectual property losses incurred.
