A new program co-developed by Toshiba of Canada Information Systems Group and CBL Data Recovery Technologies Inc. offers new Toshiba notebook users coverage for every data loss condition including physical damage, human and software error, as well as virus contamination.

Dubbed the Toshiba Data Recovery Advantage Program, customers that purchase any Toshiba notebook are offered the opportunity (within 30 days of the original purchase) to join the program at a cost of $149 for units that come with a three-year warranty and $389 for units with a one-year warranty and it includes two years of warranty coverage under the Toshiba Extended Protection Plan, with no additional charges. The program offers a three-day turnaround nationwide.

“There is no other program out quite like this one, to my knowledge,” said CBL president Bill Margeson. “Let’s face it, the IT asset on a laptop is the data, it’s not the Windows applications. “We’re trying to cut response times in half essentially, as we know downtime is the hidden nemesis in these matters.”

Sandra Joy, marketing manager of services for Toshiba of Canada ISG in Mississauga, Ont., said data recovery is but one of several warranty-extended programs her company offers to its clients. It’s channel would benefit by way of extending the warranty to its customers.

“It is a unique program and by offering the service up front, customers have the option of acquiring that added protection,” she said.

Specifically, in the event of data loss or damage to a Toshiba notebook, registered customers can return their laptops to Toshiba who in turn ships it to CBL Data Recovery for servicing, with no questions asked.

“So if your notebook happens to fall out of a car that’s travelling at 60 kilometers per hour and you find you may have reason to visit us, you can rest assured it’ll be dealt with in a timely fashion,” said Margeson. “There are no questions asked. Mind you, the third or fourth time it falls out of your car’s window someone might ask, but as we like to say, IT happens.”

Will dollar-conscious end users balk at coughing up an addition $150-$400 for the added protection? Margeson didn’t think so.

“It makes sense for business users,” he said. “Think of it as an extended warranty. For a fee, all Toshiba clients get a VIP service. The corporate executive’s spreadsheet on his or her laptop is worth a lot more than (that of the average person).”

Margeson said CBL doesn’t have similar programs established with other notebook manufacturers at present. He said he expects the Toshiba program to be fairly lucrative in Canada as plans exist to expand it worldwide.
