CBL Data Recovery Offers Advice to Business Owners to Reduce Risk of Data Loss Suffered at Hurricane Dean's Hands

HOUSTON, TX — August 23, 2007 — CBL Data Recovery Technologies Inc., a leading international provider of data recovery software and services, warns business owners with operations in Mexico to take precautions to safeguard the data on computers damaged by Hurricane Dean’s winds, rain and flood waters in affected areas of Mexico.

CBL recommends that computer users with water-damaged hard drives or removable storage media:

  • Don’t attempt to use or turn on the water-damaged hardware.
  • Don’t open the water-damaged media.
  • Don’t expose the water-damaged media to heat to dry it.
  • Don’t place the water-logged media in a freezer, or
  • Don’t agitate the hardware in an attempt to rid it of water.

Bill Margeson, president of CBL Data Recovery Technologies Inc., advises “With months still remaining in the 2007 Hurricane Season, it is critical to back up data before you pack up, if you find yourself or your business in the path of a pending storm.”

When taking assessment of losses, users should know data is very resilient. When data backups are kept on CDs or DVDs offsite, the risk of data loss is dramatically reduced. If you’re required to evacuate your home or office, these small devices can easily be taken. However, if both businesses and individuals discover flood-damaged PCs and servers, they shouldn’t panic. Data can be recovered from storage devices exposed even to salt water.

Adds Margeson, “Explore with your insurance agent what coverage is available to pay for data recovery and what exposure you have or what coverage exists for your business losses.”
