Portable Devices, Mother Nature and Human Error Threaten Critical Data in 2007

MARKHAM, ON / ARMONK, NY — January 3, 2007 — CBL Data Recovery Technologies Inc. (CBL), a leading international provider of data recovery services, predicts enterprises and consumers will continue to grapple with data loss disasters in 2007, both as a result of adopting new technologies and acts of Mother Nature.

Despite advances in weather forecasting, the frequency of fire, flood and other natural disasters such as earthquakes, tornadoes and ice storms will continue, and according to hurricane experts in the United States, the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season should have above-average activity.

In areas that are subject to the wrath of Mother Nature, even the best-laid disaster recovery plans can be upset. Data loss will happen if proper backup procedures or offsite backup practices are not followed.

Power users will continue to take their data everywhere, whether it’s on a laptop, iPod or a USB thumb drive. In fact, recent retail numbers in the U.S. found that two thirds of consumers opted to buy laptops instead of desktop computers during the post-Thanksgiving shopping rush. However, these popular storage devices will only withstand so much mishandling or abuse before data loss occurs.

With the introduction of new data recording techniques and the exponential growth of data storage capacity combined with declining prices, it’s tempting to put all bits and bytes in one basket. However, with capacities of enterprise storage now reaching one terabyte, the loss of a single server can also mean the loss of all critical business data.

“Storing all of your e-eggs in one convenient internal or external terabyte basket is all well and good until you accidentally format the wrong drive,” says Bill Margeson, president and CEO of CBL Data Recovery Technologies Inc. “That’s when you’ll need to call a data recovery expert who can put e-Humpty Dumpty back together again.”

If not managed properly, new technologies used by both businesses and home users can be just as dangerous as Mother Nature. The upgrade to a new operating system is always a major milestone and may present challenges to businesses or individuals. Early adopters of Windows Vista should back up their data when upgrading an existing machine to Vista or transferring existing data to a new Vista-capable PC or server. If the new system encounters problem, data could be lost, especially if the old system is already long gone!

Ultimately, user behavior will continue to be the leading cause of data loss. Users need to invest in anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall software to protect their systems and take care when opening e-mail attachments. While spyware and worms don’t typically destroy user data, often the only way to get them off a computer is to reformat and reinstall the operating system and applications. In the haste to restore a computer to proper working order, backups can be incomplete or not performed, thus resulting in data loss.

“In our data-dependent society, data loss is inevitable,” adds Margeson. “Mother Nature will always pose a threat to critical business information. Backing up data should be everyone’s New Year’s resolution, if not a priority.”
