Data Loss and the City

CBL Data Recovery asks, “Is your laptop giving you the signals?”

MARKHAM, ON / ARMONK, NY — May 29, 2008 — Individuals who commute daily with their laptops are at risk for data loss. The daily grind of the commute may cause damage to hard drives making the personal and business data which resides on them inaccessible. CBL Data Recovery Technologies Inc. (CBL) reminds commuters that it’s not a matter of if data loss will occur; it’s simply a matter of when.

“The daily commute to and from the city can cause damage. Despite its portability and improvements in component parts and shock absorbency, a laptop is likely to be bumped, jarred or even dropped on public transit,” states Bill Margeson, President of CBL Data Recovery Technologies Inc. “CBL has witnessed an increase in the percentage of laptop hard drive recovery jobs during the last 24 months.”

Data on laptops also can become inaccessible as a result of human error, accidental deletion of files, reformatting of partitions, physical damage to delicate component parts, read/write head crashes, electrical problems, overheating, power surges or outages, viruses, and natural disasters like floods.

Busy executives frequently don’t backup their laptops. These silos of data represent unprotected data which may take hours to recreate when lost, if recreation is possible.

For individuals who take their work home evenings or on weekends, a spilt beverage can also prove damaging and result in data loss.

Commuters and individuals who work remotely should backup their laptop or PC particularly when they observe the following warning signals that their hard drive may have mechanical problems:

  • Strange noises like grinding or clicking sounds,
  • Slow responsiveness, and
  • Need to continually reboot.

When a hard drive is failing, CBL advises:

  • Turn off the system and don’t attempt to restart it;
  • Don’t install or re-install software;
  • Don’t use utility software to fix or repair a hard drive with mechanical problems;
  • Don’t agitate the laptop or hard drive, and
  • Seek the assistance of a data recovery specialist.

“People who compute on-the-go should schedule time to regularly backup their laptops and do so,” add Margeson. “Bad habits will put your data at risk. Watch for the signals that your laptop gives you.”
