Restoring Data For 10 years: CBL Data Recovery Reaches A Decade Of Success
MARKHAM, ONTARIO-- What started as a simple repair depot for
computer hard drives has since evolved into a network of cutting
edge laboratories around the world, as CBL Data Recovery
Technologies Inc. (www.cbltech.com) marks its 10th Anniversary at
its Markham, Ontario headquarters today.
Since its founding in 1993, CBL has expanded its presence to
include 10 labs in nine countries, most recently with the opening
of a full facility in Singapore. Future plans include expansion
into Shanghai, China, in addition to its successful laboratory in
Beijing.
"Over the past decade, digital data has become more mission
critical to almost every business and an integral part of
people's everyday lives," says CBL president Bill Margeson. "As
electronic information becomes more intertwined with commerce and
our day-to-day activities, the impact of damaged or lost data
becomes even more significant. In addition, threats to that data
have multiplied tenfold."
Margeson co-founded the company with partner Zhengong Chang 10
years ago and it has since grown to employ nearly 50 qualified
and highly skilled people in many different fields holding
degrees in such fields as Semiconductor Physics, Electrical
Engineering, Computer Science, Automation Control,
Telecommunications and Psychology. In addition to its network of
labs, CBL also offers data recovery services worldwide through 46
authorized partners, including NexInnovations and Toshiba Canada.
"Working closely with CBL Data Recovery Technologies in the last
two years, we've focused on providing customers peace of mind
with the confidence in our collective ability to recover
essential information that is lost in a sudden, catastrophic
event or a slow deterioration of performance," says Domenic Creo,
Business Development Director, Technical Services, NexInnovations
Inc., Canada's largest independent technology services provider.
"Over time we have seen growing awareness by organizations of
what's required to maintain a healthy data infrastructure," adds
Margeson. "It's not just about the technology, but about
establishing best practices and creating a culture of healthy
data."
A good example of this evolution, he says, is the recent power
outage that hit North America's East Coast in August. Unlike the
crippling data losses and server failures that followed the ice
storm that hit the northeastern United States and southeastern
Canada in 1998, most of the calls CBL has received have been
regarding surge concerns and power supply-related issues. "People
and organizations are now thinking about backups. For instance,
companies are approaching us proactively for advice and we are
able to advise them on simple initiatives - like adding a UPS to
backups - that ensures their data is kept safe."
"As different operating systems and computing platforms continue
to evolve and proliferate, the potential scenarios for data
damage or loss multiply," says Alan Freedman, research manager
for infrastructure hardware at IDC Canada. "CBL Data Recovery
Technologies has found a successful niche in understanding these
scenarios and has developed tools and strategies to retrieve data
from a wide range storage media for a varied customer base."
Since opening its doors in Markham, CBL has expanded its
headquarters three times to include a Class 100 clean room and
research and development lab.
"Markham has proved itself as a favourable location to build a
company, particularly for high technology firms like CBL," says
Margeson. "The cost of doing business is appealing and from here
we've been able to attract the top talent we need and, physically
expand our facilities in response to customer demand."
