CBL Data Recovery Technologies turns the tables with launch of CBL Data Shredder freeware

CBL Germany registers more than 1,400 downloads per hour for data wipe freeware designed to meet data erasure standards of four federal government jurisdictions

ARMONK, NY and SAN DIEGO, CA — July 25 2005 /PRNewswire/ — CBL Data Recovery Technologies Inc. (www.cbldatarecovery.com), a leading international provider of computer data recovery services, has seen overwhelming interest in the initial release of its Data Shredder freeware designed to effectively and thoroughly erase data from computer hard drives.

Originally developed and released by CBL Germany, in a 24-hour period the Company tracked more than 30,000 downloads from its German Web site from users interested in downloading CBL’s Data Shredder freeware. The freeware tool has been designed to meet the specifications for data erasure of government agencies for four countries including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany.

In addition, the freeware follows the methodology of Peter Gutmann, Ph.D., a researcher with the Department of Computer Science at the University of Auckland, which has become a de facto standard for the deletion of sensitive data worldwide.

Through its efforts to recover data for its customers, CBL has found there is growing need for a robust tool for the controlled erasure of data. This is particularly appropriate when organizations sell or donate used hard drives that may contain confidential business information such as customer records. This is increasingly important in many countries where legislation is being enacted to ensure confidentiality of information.

“While most of the time we are helping customers recover lost data crucial to their businesses or day-to-day living, we have also found there is a growing need to erase data effectively from digital storage media,” says CBL Germany Managing Director Steve Trace. “PC hard drives of large corporations and government organizations often find a second life with new users, so it’s critical that the sensitive data of the original owners is wiped out completely.”

CBL Data Shredder is currently available in two versions: one for Microsoft Windows XP and one for FreeDOS in the form of a downloadable floppy maker with which users can boot their systems.

CBL is in the process of developing the freeware for other operating systems, including older versions of Windows and the Mac OS. Later versions will allow users to erase a terabyte of information with the double click of a mouse to the point where the data is completely unrecoverable, even by the experts at CBL!

CBL’s Data Shredder Version 2.0 is expected to be released in early Fall 2005.

A leader in its field, CBL is a multinational data recovery organization with facilities in the United States, Canada, Brazil, Barbados, England, Germany, China, Singapore, Japan and Australia. The company has been focused solely on the data recovery market for more than a decade. Through its on-going research and development efforts, CBL has created a library of proprietary processes to successfully recover data from failed PC hard disk drives when all other conventional methods have failed.
