MYDOOM Got Your Data Down? Don't Panic! Data Recovery Is Possible!

ARMONK, NY — March 2 2004 — While the latest strain of the MyDoom worm apparently has the ability to delete files from infected systems, CBL Data Recovery Technologies Inc. (www.cbldatarecovery.com), a leading international provider of computer data recovery services, advises enterprises and end users alike that their data is not irretrievable.

A new, file-deleting version of the MyDoom e-mail worm known as MyDoom.F is considered a growing risk as it deletes random Microsoft Word and Excel files, plus photos and movies stored on an infected computer.

“It usually just a matter of time before an enterprise is hit by a virus or worm,” says CBL Data Recovery Technologies CEO Bill Margeson. “But there is always a chance lost data can be recovered.”

Critical files, if not stored on a backup system, may still exist on an infected hard drive and be recoverable with the proper tools and techniques. The important thing for any organization to do at the earliest sign of trouble is not to panic – a hasty reaction could make the situation worse and guarantee the data is lost forever.

“Computer viruses rarely destroy files these days – more often they turn unsecured computers into machines capable of carrying out the virus writer’s commands,” adds Margeson. “These commandeered machines send out a flood of e-mail spam messages and unleash digital attacks on targeted Web sites.”

Regardless of the effect of these viruses and worms, CBL advises that any organization should have a solid strategy in place to maintain a healthy data infrastructure. Any plan should include up-to-date anti-virus software, firewalls and routine backups. Ideally, backups should be stored offsite and the entire process tested routinely.

A leader in its field, CBL is a multinational data recovery organization with facilities in the U.S.A., Canada, Brazil, Barbados, England, Germany, China, Singapore and Australia. The company has been focused solely on the data recovery market for more than a decade. Through its on-going research and development efforts, CBL has created a library of proprietary processes to successfully recover data from failed PC hard disk drives when all other conventional methods have failed.
