Many companies continue to use tape backups to store corporate data. The software allows for simple automation for overnight data backups and the cost per storage capacity just makes good business sense. Even governments use tape backups to store vital internal data. However easy and convenient storing the data on tapes might be, restoring data from tapes is a completely different matter. A tape recovery can be a long and difficult process.

During the evaluation process a single hard drive can be diagnosed in as little as 1 or 2 hours. A single DLT tape on the other hand can take days. On top of that, the actual data recovery can take several weeks. Software, type of drive, condition of the media, and method of compression make tape recoveries one of the most difficult recoveries encountered on a regular basis. With tape specialists few and far in between, CBL is fortunate to have one of the industry experts, Doug Owens, on staff. If your business continues to use tape backups check out some of these tips.
