Some highlights from the week’s tech news and current events.

  • Important emails get priority courtesy of Gmail: Google announced this week that a newly implemented algorithm will sort your email automatically. You can set custom filters to help the AI learn the patterns of your email behavior and most importantly deal with all of that junk mail.
  • In other Gmail news: Google added Google Voice functionality for its users. So far only users in the U.S. and Canada have enjoyed free calls and low cost long distance conversations. Expect the service to expand to other countries soon.
  • Apple updates: Apple updated their iPod lineup adding cameras to their iPod Touch models. Front and rear cameras for all versions and updates to the iTunes store. Will Apple TV be a hit or a dud with consumers? Expect stock to hit your local Apple store by the holiday shopping season.
  • Security & Privacy in India: India is looking to improve its security net by requesting access to data from both Google and Skype. The recent compromise by Research in Motion looks to be setting a precedent. Expect other governments to request similar access to encrypted data in the name of international security.
  • In the weather: Latest storm reports say Hurricane Earl was downgraded to category 1 status. Still potent enough to cause significant damage for those living on the east coast.
