Symantec recently released their 4th annual report on disaster recovery and the news is good, mostly.

More organizations are planning and awareness is growing. Of the companies that responded to the survey 93% were forced to deploy their disaster recovery measures last year. Of those incidents 36% were attributed to hardware or software failures. Other incidents blamed were: external security threats, natural disasters, and human error.

Although many had plans in place, not all implemented them in time. Backing up data for most organizations is not automated and is very time consuming. Close to half of the companies indicated that a lack of backup technology or automation prevented them from doing so. Despite several recovery options, protecting mission critical data is still mostly a manual process.

The respondents also indicated that testing of their disaster recovery plans do take place but are not always successful. 25% stated that their measures failed due to human error, technology failure, or poor planning/process. I guess it’s better to fail during a test rather than the real emergency.

The report reveals some interesting numbers but the solution should be clear. Review your disaster planning regularly, streamline your process, educate your staff, and when you’re done simulate an emergency to see how your plan holds up. If all else fails CBL Data Recovery will be there to answer your call. Here’s hoping you don’t face a disaster recovery situation in the near future.
