Having the right tools can sometimes help you avoid a trip to the computer help desk. It may take a bit of computer know-how but it can also be a great source of satisfaction knowing you solved the problem yourself. No need to visit a specialty store, this tool is available at most electronics stores: the hard drive enclosure.

The hard drive enclosure is an external housing for your hard drive. It allows you to take an ordinary internal hard drive and turn it instantly into a portable storage device. Most enclosures will either support an IDE or SATA connection. Be sure to check which one is right for you. In turn, the enclosure connects to any other computer via USB or Firewire connection.

Old hard drives can still be useful even when that old pc has been retired or is having problems.

At the first sign of problems take the hard drive out of the computer and plug it into your enclosure. You can connect the enclosure up to another computer in an attempt to diagnose the problems. The best case scenario is that the drive detects automatically and your files are safe and sound. Other times you may need to run a diagnostic or data recovery software to solve the problem.

It’s a great first step when attempting the do-it-yourself solution. The hard drive enclosure is an essential part of every data recovery lab.

If you find yourself in over your head, contact one of our knowledgeable data recovery specialists. It never hurts to get a bit of advice from someone who can identify what you’re going through.
