North Americans have embraced electronic filing in record numbers.

The Internal Revenue Service reported the 2007 tax filing season witnessed more than 76 million electronically-filed individual tax returns setting a new electronic record.

According to Revenue Canada, Electronic filing continues to be the choice of Canadians.

If you have transitioned to a paperless office and now receive financial documents online, you should take care of your electronic records throughout the year. Safe keeping electronic documents is as important today as keeping paper documents in a safe was for your great-grandparents. And, it is especially important at tax time.

  • Save files frequently
  • Back up critical financial receipts and tax data to removeable media such as CDs, USB thumb drives, or an external hard drive
  • Keep your backup media in a secure location, preferably offsite
  • Use the back-up feature on your tax software if available
  • Protect your computer with anti-virus software and firewalls
  • Keep the kids away from the computer containing your financial records and tax data
  • Turn off computers if they emit any unusual noise, and
