March 12

While hardware failures are usually stigmatized for being the main culprit of data loss there is another big factor: human error. Accidental deletions, knocking over an external hard drive, spilling coffee on the keyboard, getting infected by a virus, or whatever the reason, we’ve all been there at some point. With March break already upon us there’s another factor parents should consider: little human errors.

During this upcoming Spring Break week many parents will be using some vacation time at home with their kids. Let’s face it, the bulk of their time will be spent in front of the television or on the computer. If it’s a family computer it’s probably a good idea to back up your data tonight. Not to say your child will imminently cause the demise of your entire photo collection, but rather the risk of that happening increases exponentially when they have exclusive access over a week.

Mistakes can happen and when you’re done giving them “the talk” you can have peace of mind that you backed up your data. Losing your data was never a possibility and the minor inconvenience of syncing your computer up to that external drive was completely worth the trouble.

What’s that saying, “idle hands lead to …” well it’s not important anyways. Just remember that you also used to cause little human errors all the time! With a bit of precaution, you can prevent data loss from any little “Spring Breaks”.
