March 31

CBL would like to remind everyone to back up their data on World Backup Day, which is this week, on March 31st. Backing up your data provides you with another copy of your files in case anything was to happen to the original version. In addition to important documents, files that can be backed up include images, videos, and emails.

There are a couple of ways to back up your data but if using an external hard drive, be sure to keep the device in an alternate location separate from the main drive in case the cause of data loss is due to natural disaster or a location-specific accident–such as a fire.

With 30% of people stating that they’ve never backed up their data, CBL is taking special care this World Backup Day to inform people of the prevalence and risk of data loss, as well as detail the methods one can use to back up his or her files. Data loss is more common and devastating than most people realize when taking into account the numerous different devices that information is stored.

With 113 smartphones stolen every minute and 1 in 10 computers infected with viruses per month, data loss is a real risk. All it takes is one seemingly innocuous human error or minor accident to lose everything. In fact, 29% of data loss disasters are caused by an accident.

There are two generally acceptable ways to back up your data:
  1. Back up to an external USB drive
  2. Back up files using cloud based storage, i.e. through a web-based service provider
To find step-by-step instructions for backing up data to an external hard drive based on your computer’s operating system, go to http://www.worldbackupday.com/en/.

If you are only backing up a number of files or folders from a computer that don’t exceed the maximum allotted space per user, you could use a free cloud-based storage provider such as Dropbox or Google Drive.

To employ cloud storage to back up your entire computer however, you should research online backup providers to evaluate the options and decide which is right for you. Be sure to read our article on the risks of using cloud based storage before you decide on this option.
