The IDC is in with their latest report on the ever-expanding ‘Digital Universe’. The research and analytics firm regularly keeps track of the growing amount of information the world is producing, what types of data and who’s creating and saving it. Latest figures highlight that the world’s data is up to a staggering 4.4 ZETTAbytes. This growth is exponential the past number of years as a more-connected and data-aware world is producing like never before. EMC heads up the annual review with a report and infographic (see below) that adds to the breakdown. It highlights what areas are really pushing the ‘universe’ in size and what needs protecting. Global consumers and an increase in connected devices (ala “The Internet of Things”) are breaking new ground in the amount of information we create, keep and use. As always, CBL encounters and deals with the importance of all this data on a daily basis. As we always say, it’s not the amount but the content of the data that matters. When some (and increasingly larger amounts) of it goes missing, you know who to reach for recovery help.
